Pastels
Artists' medium of chalk and pigment, tempered with gum water and usually molded into sticks; also, a work in the medium. Pastel has been very popular in France, where it was introduced in the 18th cent. It was used by such 19th-cent. masters as DEGAS, TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, WHISTLER, and CASSATT. In the 20th century MATISSE created superb pastels.
